2008 Best Answer For Cancer Foundation 990 Form
How it Began
Co-Founders of Best Answer For Cancer Foundation (formerly, The Elka Best Foundation) (as a Project of the National Heritage Foundation), Rachel Best and Annie Brandt did not know each other in 2004, but they had something big in common. They both had cancer and they both decided that they were not going to use conventional treatment, due to their mutual desire to maintain a high quality-of-life while killing the cancer. Rachel had a recurrence of ovarian cancer and Annie had advanced-stage breast cancer. According to the conventional doctors, neither one of them had a good prognosis.
Even though they were located a half country apart (Rachel in San Diego, CA and Annie in Austin, TX), they followed the same path. Both of them found Targeted Low-Dose Chemotherapy (IPTLD™) and started treatment. In September 2004, both Rachel and Annie set about forming nonprofit foundations to support IPTLD™. Annie heard about Rachel in September and called her, and the two of them began to collaborate on the creation of a foundation. In October 2004, Rachel filed the documents with the National Heritage Foundation to create the Project called Best Answer For Cancer Foundation (formaly, Best Answer For Cancer Foundation ), named after her mother, who died of breast cancer in 1980.
In March of 2006, Rachel died from an infection that she caught in the hospital as the result of an operation. This was a very sad day for the Foundation and the hundreds of friends that Rachel had made during her lifetime, not to mention the future of IPTLD™. The Project got a further blow in early summer, learning that they could no longer function as a part of the National Heritage Foundation: they would have to go out as a standalone 501c3. Annie took over as Executive Director and set about managing the evolution to a formal 501c3. During this process, she brought on an executive staff: LaMae Weber as Director of Operations, and Rebecca Ayre as Director of Physician Relations. Annie also invited the 3 most eminent IPTLD™ physicians to join them on the Board: Donato Perez Garcia III, MD; Steven G. Ayre, MD; and Les Breitman, MD.
Due to demanding scientific activities in support of IPTLD™, Dr. Donato has stepped down from the BOD and joined the Medical Advisory Board, effective September 2007. He has designated Best Answer For Cancer Foundation (formaly, Best Answer For Cancer Foundation ) as the Official Spokesperson for IPTLD™ as well as the Official Host of the Annual International IPTLD™ Conference. He has also endowed the Boards with the responsibilities of training and certifying all IPTLD™ physicians.
